The Sari-Clad Bride team went to their first Dulhan Expo on Sunday, October 4th the Marriot in Melville, New York and was amazed by all the creative ideas they found and wonderful people they met! Dulhan Expo is the biggest South Asian bridal show on the east coast and is organized by Sumit and Shikha Arya. The Aryas been organized 29 successful events so far. This particular Expo had over 60+ vendor booths; photographers, makeup artists, decorators, wedding planners, caterers, banquet halls, entertainers, etc, making it a great resource for South Asian brides (apart from us, of course!). We spoke to a lot of these vendors and picked out our favorites. Stay tuned for vendor spotlights on some amazing companies and personalities. But, for now, here’s a quick look at the Expo.

Searching for a perfect wedding venue is one of, if not THE hardest part of the planning process. Wedding professionals and banquet managers are adept at making you feel comfortable and wooing you over with fancy terminology so it might be hard to weed out the good from the bad. Make sure you get answers to the essential questions below, before you book your favorite venue.

THE BRAINLESS QUESTIONS:

  • How many people can the venue safely and legally accomodate? If you’re dealing with a shady manager, he/she might try to get you to fit more people than is legally allowed. Before signing on the dotted line, make sure the number of guests you can safely have inside the venue is included in the contract.
  • What is the price difference between a sit-down dinner and buffet? A sit-down dinner is usually the more expensive option but might be worth the splurge. You might even be able to cut costs by taking out certain courses.
  • Are rates different for different days of the week? For different seasons/time of year?
  • Is there a valet parking system? Is the cost included in the contract or will guests have to pay out of pocket?
  • What are the open-bar policies?
  • What are the silverware and chair policies? Sometimes the venue provides these and sometimes they don’t, depending on whether it’s a banquet hall or just a reception space.
