The Gaye Holud is definitely the best part of a Bengali wedding! It’s the day everyone at the wedding gets to be silly, throwing holud (turmeric) at each other, dressing up in fun, colorful colors such as yellow, orange, red, and green, and dancing the night away.
Sara and Joel’s Gaye Holud had a traditional yellow and orange color scheme and they followed most of the conventional rituals. But for a little twist, they had a Thai buffet instead of the typical Bengali menu. Yum!
Sara:
“I know when I imagined my wedding, it included all the cultural events that are traditionally part of a Bangladeshi wedding, like the mehndi and the gaye holud, and Joel was also intrigued by all the traditions and was happy about the fact that we weren’t going to have a cookie-cutter wedding. I have to say, he and his parents were wonderfully supportive and definitely put up with a lot when it came to all the things we asked them to do.”
“So all the family and guests are going to come up and put tumeric on our heads and then they’re going to feed us a spoonful of dessert?”
“Um, everyone is going to feed us stuff?”
“Yup!”

The Sari-Clad Bride absolutely loves fusion weddings, especially when the couple is as detail-oriented as Sara and Joel were! Sara combined her Bangladeshi traditions with Joel’s Filipino culture to create an ideal wedding day for both of them.
Let’s get started with an adorable mehndi night!
Sara and Joel invited their very close friends and family to share in one of Sara’s favorite parts of a Desi wedding: the Mehndni! Sara wore an adorable peagreen salwar suit, and let her hands take over the show.

Our goal is to connect South Asians in America, and their non-South Asian friends, with our culture and heritage through fashion. We provide everyone with the opportunity to wear that fabulous Bollywood look at weddings, festivals, cultural celebrations, and formal social events. At Sari Closet, customers can borrow gorgeous saris, buy all of the right accessories and jewelry, and design the perfect look for themselves. And if they need advice or guidance, our sari experts, who we call “saristas”, are ready to help.
We prefer the term “borrow” because we strive to retain the culture of borrowing a sari from friends and family. Put another way, we want our customers to think of borrowing from Sari Closet as if they are borrowing from a friend–one with an extensive wardrobe.

It’s raining designer bridal fashion around here! First, we brought you Rekha’s drool-worthy sangeet Neeta Lulla lehenga and custom-made lehenga-gown for her reception, and today we bring you Luna’s Ritu Kumar masterpiece!
Here’s what photographer, Binita Patel, had to say about Luna’s ravishing bridal look:
“She looked like a Mughul princess from a time and place far far away. Exotic royalty almost. From head-to-toe, no detail was overlooked. I simply adored Luna’s Ritu Kumar dress and Michael Kors shoes. And not to mention that she’s already cute as a button!” Read more
