Dubai Gold Souq

Dubai Gold Souq = SHOPPING HEAVEN

When stepping into the shopping complexes in Dubai, your eyes will first be greeted by GOLD–almost everywhere!  Gold shops in Dubai, in my opinion, are more prevalent than clothing, or even food!

My mom and I had began our 3 and a half week venture to begin my brother’s wedding shopping and it all started in Dubai. My mom and I thought our two day shopping trip was far too short, but we managed to purchase a storm and in my opinion, Dubai = shopping haven!!

Planning a wedding is no joke–especially a Desi one! But, it’s important for brides to take the time out to relax and spend some quality time with themselves and what better way to do it than to get lost in a book? The Sari-Clad Bride’s book corner reviews and recommends stories that will take your mind off of your Big Day. While our main subjects of interest are hilarious wedding tales and South Asian authors (combining the two themes of The Sari-Clad Bride!), we’re open to reviewing anything you guys will enjoy. If you have any book or short story suggestions, please email us at thesaricladbride@gmail.com. Enjoy!

There are so many books out there that cover the South Asian diaspora that writers tend to get repetitive with the subject. But, Madras on Rainy Days is an offbeat, more scandalous version of what happens when an 19-year-old  Indian-American girl, Laila, goes back to Hyderabad to get married. What’s so endearing about Samina Ali’s main protagonist, Laila, is that she does not fight her heritage. In fact, in some aspects, she’s more comfortable being Indian than she is being American. Asiana Wedding Magazine is a South Asian wedding magazine based out of the U.K. and India and truth be told, a single edition is really pricy in the U.S.! So, the Sari-Clad Bride decided to take the liberty and provide her readers with scans of  ‘Bridal Images: the professional guide to this season’s essential looks’–a story Asiana Wedding ran in Vol 3. Issue 1 2009.
We were definitely inspired by some of these beautiful bridal looks–a traditional wedding day look is paired with a more modern reception look. Print out your favorite and take it to your makeup artist so you can look exactly the way you want to on your Big Day! If you don’t see something you like, look out for part two, where we’ll show you the second set of looks from this story.

We love the green, orange and brown color scheme of this save-the-date card! The design is simple, yet elegant enough for a modern South Asian wedding. This Etsy.com seller mentions that the ink and envelope colors are customizable, so if you have a different theme in mind, it’s entirely doable.  A cute option for a mehndi, gayer holud or bridal shower. Trosseau shopping in South Asia

Trosseau shopping in South Asia

In South Asian culture, it’s not unheard of to go back home to shop for your wedding, whether that be India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, etc. In fact, many brides do just that in order to save time, money, and have a larger selection of choices for wedding fashion. I did my own Reception shopping in Dhaka, Bangladesh and recently completed wedding shopping for my brother’s upcoming wedding in Dubai, Dhaka, and Kolkata.

Here are some important things to keep in mind when shopping abroad;

DO:

  • Plan far in advance. -Make sure you have adequate time for you each city or area of a city you plan to shop in.
  • Try to take a local wherever you go as you will get ripped off if anyone senses you are a tourist . Read more
